We often focus on our heart, brain and bones when it comes to keeping healthy. But, we usually forget about one of the most important organs of our body that help us to see around- our eyes. We can avoid various eye related problems by maintaining the health of our eyes. Here is a list of the few habits to be avoided to maintain beautiful and healthy eyes.
Avoid eating junk: junk food like pizza, burger, hotdogs and others are loaded with salt and fat, which is bad for our overall health and can lead to diabetes and hypertension. When specifically talking about eyes, too much salt is again bad for the health of our eyes too. Too much salt increases the eye pressure that kills the optic nerves hence causing blindness. Therefore eating junk food, which tops the list of salty foods, should be avoided. Moreover you should also avoid the intake of too much salt in your home made food too. Green, leafy vegetables like spinach and kale, nuts like almonds, milk, fish and eggs are some of the foods for healthy eyes that you must include in your daily diet.
Avoid late night working: How well did you sleep at night, is something reflected right from your eyes. If you did not sleep well, dark circles are likely to appear under your eyes. Sleepiness can also cause pain in the eyes and decrease the vision. On the other hand, if you get adequate sleep at night, not only will you feel fresh and energized, but you will also get rid of any under eye dark circles and heaviness. Therefore, you must avoid sleeping late at nights and get a peaceful night’s slumber. You must also adopt a proper sleeping pattern for getting a good sleep. Sleeping on your back is the best of all sleeping pattern to maintain the health of your spine and also your eyes.
Avoid or quit smoking: smoking, as we know, can cause various health related problems and therefore you must quit smoking or avoid getting into this bad habit. According to various researches, smoking is associated with a higher risk of developing macular degeneration, cataract, and optic nerve damage, all of which can lead to blindness. Therefore it is necessary for you to avoid smoking for the sake of your eyes.
Avoid going in the sun without sunglasses: the harmful ultra violet rays can damage our skin and therefore we should avoid getting out under the sky without applying a sunscreen. While UV rays can damage our skin, they can damage our eyes too, causing cataract and macular degeneration. In order to protect our eyes we should always wear sunglasses, whenever going out in the sun. When selecting sunglasses for yourself, you must make sure that you select the ones that block at least 99% of UVA & UVB rays.
Avoid aggressive rubbing of eyes: although avoiding rubbing your eyes, especially when they are itchy or tired can be difficult, but you must shun this habit of rubbing your eyes as it can transfer the germs and bacteria from your hands into the eyes and thus can lead to inflammations and eye infections. Make sure you wash your hands with soap before you touch your eyes.
Along with avoiding the above set of habits, you must also wash your eyes daily with clean water, eat healthy food and go for regular eye check-ups to take good care of your healthy looking eyes and maintaining a healthy vision.
